Ages 60 and Older

The women's health edition

There's no doubt about it: we're living longer than ever before -and these years bring unique health concerns.
Screening for colon cancer and mammograms are absolutely necessary now

Almost every time, colon cancer can be cured if screening detects the cancer early. And while women over 60 who have had several negative pap or smear tests don't have to get them any more, it's important to see your doctor for pelvic examination and clinical breast examination .

Getting exercise should also be high on your list of priority. Go for walks dance, gardening or spend 20 minutes a week doing this type of weight-bearing aerobic exercise.

On the other days, lift weights for 15 to 30 minutes. You'll burn extra calories and strengthen your bones and muscles. Even if you have low bonemass or osteoporosis, lifting weights is safe if you start with a light weight of no more than 2 kilograms (4 pounds) and try slowly.

You'll build muscle, bone mass and balance. To avoid injury, give yourself a day to rest between strength -training sessions. Besides keeping you strong, exercise could let you lose weight, which will help you avoid pain in your hips , knees, ankles and feet.

There's no question that people who remain intellectually active and socially engaged in older years do better,' says Dr Eugenia siegler, an associate professor of clinical medicine. Use this time to travel and learn new things.
